This "Wizard" automates the Transmitter Gain calibration procedure described in the Calibration Procedures section of the K3 Owner's manual.
Transmitter Gain Calibration must be performed after a K3 kit is assembled, and may be required at other times.
The procedure is performed by transmitting a short signal into a dummy load at specific power levels on each band.
This page introduces the procedure and describes the steps. Some steps may be dimmed to indicate that they do not apply to your K3 because a KPA3 or KXV3 option has not been installed and enabled.
The 5 and 50 Watt calibrations require that a 50-ohm dummy load be attached to an antenna connector. If your K3 has a KAT3 antenna tuner installed, the dummy load can be connected to either ANT 1 or ANT 2.
The dummy load should be capable of dissippating 50 Watts for short periods if the KPA3 100 Watt power amplifier is installed.
Calibration is stopped if the SWR reaches 2:1 at any time.
Click "Calibrate" to perform the 5 watt calibration. The calibration frequencies are shown as the K3 makes a short transmission on each band. This takes about a minute.
The 50 watt calibration page is shown only if a KPA3 100-watt Power Amplifier has been installed and enabled through the K3 CONFIG:KPA3 menu selection.
The K3 CONFIG:KPA3 menu selection must be "PA nor" for 50 watt calibration.
Click "Calibrate" to perform 50 watt calibration. Calibration frequencies are shown as the K3 makes a short transmission on each band. This step should complete in less than a minute.
This page is shown only if a KXV3 Transverter Interface has been installed and enabled through the K3 CONFIG:KXV3 menu selection.
Milliwatt calibration is required if you plan to use the low-level RF output with a transverter or other equipment.
Milliwatt calibration requires that a 50-ohm dummy load be attached to your K3's rear-panel XVTR OUT BNC connector. Calibration may appear to succeed without a dummy load, but the calibration will be inaccurate.
Some versions of the K3 Owner's Manual do not describe the dummy load requirement for milliwatt calibration. This will be corrected in subsequent versions of the K3 Owner's Manual.
This page is shown only if a KXV3 Transverter Interface has been installed and enabled through the K3 CONFIG:KXV3 menu selection.
After you have connected a dummy load to the XVTR OUT connector, click "Calibrate" to perform 1 milliwatt calibration. Calibration frequencies are shown as the K3 makes a short transmission on each band. This step should complete in less than a minute.
This page shows the result of each of the calibrations.
